As we read Ecclesiastes for Sukkot (thinking especially of the more iconic moments, like "vanity of vanities" and "there is nothing new beneath the sun") I have found myself thinking about the past Yamim Noraim. One new reading in Mishkan Hanefesh, our new machzor, was called "Hakarat Hatov: Recognizing the Good." Instead of "Ashamnu, Bagadnu..." we read "Ahavnu (we loved), Bachinu (we cried)." This theme of hakarat hatov appeared again recently in Nick Kristof's column in the Times. You can read about it here: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/01/opinion/nicholas-kristof-the-most-important-thing-and-its-almost-a-secret.html?mwrsm=Email
Ecclesiastes can only be correct with "vanities of vanities; futility of futility" if we allow it to be. Let's not forget to recognize the good!
